Reviewing your planning systems periodically is important
It is common mistake made by businessmen to implement a plan and then forget about it. The thought of reviewing any solution comes to mind only when some problem crops up but till then the damage is already done. Thus, it is extremely important for businesses to critically analyze, assess and review the performance of their planning systems so that you can synchronize your demand and supply and manage your inventory. This is of increasing importance in these recessionary times.
When a planning system was installed, the economic conditions were different and the business environment was also probably different. The economy may have gone for a boom or a recession now and the system has to be moulded and changed in accordance because the results of the planning system may not be in sync with the current times. If this happens, it could lead to bad decision or too much of manual intervention may be necessary for review and modifications.
However, reviewing the planning system is applicable not only in bad times, but it has to be done periodically for optimum and desirable results in the constantly changing business environment. Having this planning system audit or health check should form a part of your yearly or half yearly planning process review. This would ensure that you take corrective actions at appropriate times and even if no major correction is required, it will also give you opportunities to fine tune the solution deployed. There is generally no need to bring about a major change and only a slight modification here and there is needed.
Also, when upgrading a new version of the software, apart from the technical upgrade, there should also be a proper assessment of the solution while performing the upgrade.
