Checking circulation of counterfeit products through RFID

The availability of counterfeit products in Thailand affects the profits of companies, the tax collected and at the same time shakes the trust of consumers.

In this light, and to check the circulation of counterfeit products in the cigarette and liquor sector, the Excise Department is putting efforts in place to introduce microchips with radio frequency identification (RFID) to replace the excise stamps that are currently used.

The problem in checking the circulation of counterfeit products arises from the fact that it is extremely difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake excise stamps. With criminals becoming technically sound, they can copy these stamps to perfection.

Further, to ensure that there are no loopholes, the RFID system would be linked to department’s database. The system would be introduced within a year.

This effort should ideally be replicated across the globe to ensure that the circulation of counterfeit products can be ruled out completely.
